Bird protection measures are succesfully implemented on the high voltage electricity transmission grid

During the Project different measures protecting birds from the short circuit and trying to reduce the risk of bird collisions into high voltage electricity transmission lines while increasing their visibility are planned to implement, as well as nestboxes for falcons are erected on the pylons  of high voltage electricity transmission grid in the large part of the country.
During the first year of the Project,  preparatory actions of the Project administration, publicity, monitoring and conservation measures were implemented. Since spring 2015 all planned practical bird protection activities have been launched. Their implementation is fast, and some positive impact results can be seen now.
During the first six month of the year in the most dangerous places for birds the visibility of electricity transmission lines was improved  putting up 922 special white spiral type markers on the lines (LITGRID Project part). Additionally, to increase visibility in two most dangerous places, special bird flight diverters were put up. Following the special study, 2177 “Wishbone” and 1601 “Saucer” type installations were put up on the  utility poles in different country areas for the protection of the White storks against their mortality. These measures prevent the birds from sitting on the dangerous constructions and reduce the risk of short circuit. Apart from these bird protection measures, following reccomendations of the study prepared at the beginning of the Project , 90 nest-boxes for falcons (mainly, Common Kestrels) were erected on the pylons  of high voltage electricity transmission grid. As it was already informed, three of the nest-boxes were occupied, although only ten nest-boxes were erected before the breeding season of Common Kestrels. The nest-boxes are erected at the hight allowing to monitor them without interruption high–voltage in the transmission lines.
Currently, the implementation of all practical bird protection measures is continuing. You can see photos of the works in the gallery below.
