A book for schools is published

Lithuanian Ornithological Society has published and started distribution a book for secondary schools “Birds and high voltage electricity transmission lines. When is safe to live?”. The target audience of this booklet is school pupils, and the aim is to describe the given problem and possible solutions. In addition, the booklet invites schoolchildren to join conservation actions, as they can find all information about where and how to send information about dead birds found under high voltage electricity lines.
These activities and public assistance are very important if we want to collect the data on the segments of the lines where bird collisions are the most often, and where the implementation of the specific safeguards could significantly reduce bird mortality and the damage of electricity transmission lines to nature.
The book is richly illustrated with photos, and gives information about avian biology, bird behavior and habitat selection, as well as introduces which factors of human-modified environment are successfully used by birds, and which are dangerous. One of the threats is the high voltage electricity transmission lines, which, due to the lack of good visibility or location in places with high abundance of birds, cause danger to different species of birds. The booklet introduces the main aims of the project and all the implemented activities. The maps included in the booklet also provide information about the main activities.
One of the project aims is to involve local communities and schools into bird mortality under overhead electricity transmission lines monitoring works. The booklet provides all information how to collect data on dead birds found near the lines and where to send information. We believe that older schoolchildren interested in nature conservation, as well as all nature indifferent public, can participate in the monitoring. Also, we want to warn that walking under overhead high voltage electric transmission lines can be dangerous, so we remind to behave carefully and responsibly. Lithuanian Ornithological Society collects all data on bird mortality under overhead high voltage electric transmission lines, so everyone is invited to send the info filling the special form which will soon be available on our website.
The book “Birds and high voltage electricity transmission lines. When is safe to live?” is published as one of the measures of the Project activity “Public Awareness and Dissemination of Results (E)”. It will be distributed to secondary schools, total circulation is 800 units. The author of the text and most illustrations is well known naturalist, writer, bird photographer and conservation specialist Selemonas Paltanavičius.
The publication is prepared and published implementing the EU financial project “Installation of the bird protection measures on the high voltage electricity transmission grid in Lithuania” No. LIFE13 BIO/LT/001303.
