The implementation of conservation measures in the high-voltage electricity transmission network is continuing
In order to limit the risk of bird mortality due to short circuit or striking into the wires, and improving the breeding conditions of Common Kestrels LITGRID implemented a series of activities planned in the EU financed LIFE+ project “Installation of the bird protection measures on the high voltage electricity transmission grid in Lithuania “ Nr. LIFE13 BIO/LT/001303 in the first quarter of 2016.
The visibility of the wires was increased putting a special markers on them. In one sector, extremely dangerous for birds, 196 well seen bird diverters were hanged on the wires. In total, 1494 white spiral markers and 1451 bird diverters were installed during the Project.
For the protection of birds, mainly White Storks, against death due to the short circuit, according the special draft study prepared before the Project, special protection measures – 3624 Wishbone and 2515 Saucer type of installations were constructed. Wishbone type of installations prevent the birds from landing in the most dangerous places of high voltage electricity transmission lines supports, while Saucer type of installations fitted over said supports insulators, reduce the possibility of short circuit. Of all these, 1042 Wishbone type of installations and 695 Saucer type of installations were installed on 281 poles in the first quarter of 2016.
Apart from bird protection measures, according to the draft study recommendations prepared before the Project, 309 nest-boxes for Common Kestrels were erected on the poles of high voltage electricity transmission lines. Of them, 182 nest-boxes were erected in the first quarter of 2016. They will be checked soon by Project ornithologists.
At present, the implementation of all practical conservation measures is continuing. Together with this, the monitoring of effectiveness of these measures is going on.
